A steering wheel doesn't bolt to your steering column. Between the two sits a boss kit — also called a hub adapter — and it's the part that has to match your car, not your wheel. Get it wrong and nothing lines up.
The wheel side is nearly universal
Almost every quality aftermarket wheel uses a 6×70mm bolt pattern: six bolts on a 70mm circle. NARDI, Personal, MOMO and most Italian wheels share it, which is why one boss kit usually works across brands.
Measure before you buy. Some MOMO and older Japanese wheels use 6×74mm. The two look identical in photographs and will not interchange.
The car side is not universal at all
This is where people get caught. The boss kit is chassis-specific:
- An S13 kit will not fit an AE86.
- A kit for a pre-airbag car will not fit the same model after airbags arrived.
- Nissan changed column splines between generations — "fits Nissan" means nothing.
Common makers are Works Bell, HKB and Key's Racing. Works Bell is the most widely available and the easiest to get a straight answer on.
Short hub, or standard?
A standard boss kit puts the wheel roughly where the factory one sat. A short hub pulls it closer to the dash. If you're adding a quick release later you want the short hub — a quick release adds 50–70mm of its own, and on a standard boss the wheel ends up in your chest.
Airbags: read this before you order
Removing an airbag steering wheel disables the airbag. On most cars it will also light the airbag warning lamp permanently, which can fail an inspection depending on where you live. There are resistor workarounds for the light; there is no workaround for the missing airbag. Know what you're taking on, or have a shop do it.
Horn button
Many used wheels arrive without one, and they aren't interchangeable — a MOMO button won't seat properly in a NARDI centre ring. If the listing photos don't show a button, assume there isn't one.
What to tell us
Message us with your chassis code and year — S13, R32, AE86, whatever it is — and whether the car has an airbag. That's everything we need to tell you which kit you want. We'd rather answer first than process a return.
